When you think of the Caribbean, the first destinations to spring to mind are probably places like Barbados, Bermuda, Cuba and the Cayman Islands. However, I think it\u2019s worth getting away from the most popular destinations and discovering one of the region\u2019s best-kept secrets – Curacao.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not familiar with this island, it\u2019s part of the ABC group, which also comprises Aruba and Bonaire. You\u2019ll find it just off the coast of Venezuela to the south of many of the Caribbean\u2019s main destinations. As a result, it\u2019s situated outside the hurricane belt in the area, which means it very rarely experiences severe storms.<\/p>\n

1. The weather<\/b><\/p>\n

So, the first reason to consider Curacao for a getaway is its consistent weather – especially if you\u2019re keen to escape the chill in the UK. The island gets very low annual rainfall and is blessed with a good amount of sun and mild temperatures all year round, without ever getting too humid – the perfect combination.<\/p>\n

2. The beaches<\/b><\/p>\n

You could argue that every Caribbean island can boast about its beaches and, while that\u2019s true, Curacao really does have some absolute gems. There are plenty of stretches of sand where you\u2019ll find a host of amenities, including Playa Kalki, Playa Porto Mari and Cas Abao.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a more secluded experience you\u2019re looking for then Curacao can also deliver. Among its top peaceful seaside spots is Playa Lagun, which is especially good for snorkelling, while Playa Jeremi is a small and undeveloped bay where you can soak up the sun in complete peace and quiet.<\/p>\n

3. The activities<\/b><\/p>\n

Active travellers will also love what Curacao has to offer, as the island is an excellent place for water and land-based sports. Along the coast you can have a go at kayaking, sailing, snorkelling and scuba diving (the coral reefs are stunning) – perfect if you\u2019re something of a water baby.<\/p>\n

Head inland and you\u2019ll find there are several pristine national parks that are ideal for hiking, including Christoffel Park, Shete Boka National Park and Den Dunki National Park. All of these places have walking trails that you can follow, with some easy routes for a gentle stroll as well as tougher treks if you\u2019re looking for a challenge.<\/p>\n

4. The history<\/b><\/p>\n

Curacao is a true melting pot of cultures, having initially been inhabited by the Spanish and later taken on as a Dutch colony. The Dutch influence really stands out in its towns, but particularly in the capital Willemstad. The architecture is unmistakably European and there are many historical buildings here, including Fort Amsterdam that once protected the harbour and settlement.<\/p>\n

Pay a visit to the Museum Kura Hulanda in Willemstad to find out more about the cultures that have played a part in Curacao\u2019s development, as well as to learn about the African slave trade in the region. The Otrobanda district of Willemstad became a focal point for the free black community in the 18th century and has many interesting stories to tell.<\/p>\n

5. Discover more of the Caribbean<\/b><\/p>\n

The great thing about visiting the Caribbean is that you can explore more than one destination with ease. Curacao is just one of many fascinating isles, with Aruba and Bonaire within reach – especially if you\u2019re on a cruise.<\/p>\n

In fact, a cruise itinerary is probably the best way to get the most out of a holiday here. There are some\u00a0examples of trips here<\/a>; to give you an idea of what to expect, a tour that stops at Curacao will usually also head to places like Aruba, Fort Lauderdale in Florida and Princess Cays in the Bahamas.<\/p>\n
