Formerly known as Makri (\u039c\u03ac\u03ba\u03c1\u03b7), the city was renamed &#8216;Fethiye&#8217; in 1934, to honor Fethi Bey, one of the first pilots of the Ottoman Air Force killed on an early mission. In the last ten years, Fethiye has become a magnet for British citizens. Apart from its climate and natural beauty, the British are attracted by its less expensive lifestyle and the hospitality of the local people. As a result of increasing British population, Fethiye-\u00d6ludeniz was chosen as the best tourism center in the world by The Times and The Guardian newspapers in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The Fethiye region has many interesting sites to explore and wonderful things you can do:<\/p>\n<h3>Fethiye Old Town<\/h3>\n<p>A typical Aegean Coastal village, Fethiye Old Town is located right at the center of the region. Commonly called &#8220;downtown&#8221;, it has narrow streets that opens to small squares full of various shops (I wonder if they accept <a title=\"exclusive discounts at CouponCodes4u Exclusive Coupon Codes for extra discountx?), coffeehouses and restaurants serving anything from fish to kebabs to pizzas. Late afternoon and night times is perfect for a walk along the promenade of Fethiye by the Marina and sip some good Turkish coffee or beer at one of the many street cafes awaiting you there.\n\n\n<h3>\u00d6ludeniz Beach<\/h3>\n<p>A small resort village in the Fethiye district, \u00d6ludeniz Beach is one of the most photographed beaches on the Mediterranean. A ghost town, it is now preserved as a museum village and a historical monument consisting of hundreds of rundown but still mostly intact Greek-style houses and churches which cover a small mountainside and serve as a stopping place for tourists visiting Fethiye and nearby \u00d6ludeniz. It is presumed that Kayak\u00f6y is the inspiration behind &#8220;Eskibah\u00e7e&#8221;, the imaginary village chosen by Louis de Berni\u00e8res as the setting of his 2004 novel Birds without Wings.<\/p>\n<h3>How to get to Fethiye<\/h3>\n<p>The fastest way to reach Fethiye is by flying to International Dalaman airport. Many direct flights are available from UK and Germany as well as charter flights from many European countries during the summer. From Dalaman airport, you can ride the shuttle buses to Fethiye.
