Welcome to round 100 of ‘Meet a Random Traveller’. The series dedicated to bringing attention to fantastic people all around the world doing their thing.

Random Traveller #100

Who are you?

I’m Bram and I’m from Antwerp, Belgium. My life really started a little more than three years ago, when I boarded a flight to Australia to spend a year working and traveling.

It was something that completely changed my life. After I arrived back home I picked up an old job, saved up some money and took off again. I have been doing that for three years now, dividing my time between a ‘normal’ working lifestyle and extensive travels.

What’s the deal?

Before I left for Australia in 2010 I set up a very simple website on Blogger. The idea was to write something every once in a while and share some pictures. Just to keep my friends and family informed on what I was doing Down Under. I didn’t even take my laptop with me. I just went to internet cafés, libraries and hostels to check my email and post things. As I kept doing that – twice a month – I started to realize how much I actually loved sharing my experiences that way.

However, I still didn’t spent a lot of time doing that. It wasn’t until after coming back home in 2011 that I started to take blogging more seriously. For example, up until then I had been writing in my native Dutch. I decided that it would be a good idea to begin posting things in English. I also bought a domain name…

Now most of my time is spend online, writing or editing photos, interacting with other bloggers and reading. And I love every second of it.

My website now focuses mainly on photography and adventure travel.

What’s your favourite type of transportation and is there one particular journey that sticks in your mind?

That entirely depends on which country or region I am in. Australia is the perfect place for road trips and that’s why I bought a car when I was there. Driving around Tasmania and a road trip up the empty west coast definitely come to mind now.

But there’s one particular journey that can’t be beaten. In the spring of this year I cycled to the North Cape in Norway and back home to Belgium. It took me three months and I cycled through nine countries. I absolutely loved the freedom of traveling at my own pace, pitching a tent wherever I felt like and exploring Scandinavia, one of the greatest regions on the planet, by bicycle. It was tough sometimes though, but that only makes the good times more worthwhile.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve tried while travelling and would you have it again?

In Norway I ate a piece of whale. I will never, ever do that again. For ethical reasons only, it didn’t actually taste that bad.

If you hadn’t taken that first flight and fell in love with travel what do you think you’d be doing now?

If I hadn’t gone to Oz – which was in fact my first flight ever – I would definitely be doing what I spent four years studying for. I’m a horticulturalist and I would probably be designing gardens and parks right now. I like being outdoors and in nature.

What’s Next?

In two weeks I am flying to the States to visit my girlfriend in Vermont and celebrate a white Christmas with her family. We’ll be in New York City for New Year’s Eve, which is extremely exciting!

A big thanks to Bram for taking part, great to have you.
