Random Traveller #3

Welcome to round 3 of ‘Meet a Random Traveller’. Once we hit the road this section will be dedicated to the people we meet along the way but, until then, we shall meet some of the guys and gals who have beat us to it and are already out their doing their thing.
Random Traveller #3
Who are you?
Should I be lying down for this talking about my commitment issues? I am Amar, the owner, author and full-time traveller for Gap Year Escape. Among other things I have written for a few publications and am a featured blogger for Lonely Planet and STA Travel but that doesn’t really define me. I love travel. It’s really that simple. Sure someone keeps stealing my cheese but I can forgive that one small indiscretion considering I have turned travelling round the world into my job. I am quite literally living the dream. I have three aims with my blog; inform, inspire and entertain.
Don’t you have a home to go to?
If I am honest no! The last few years I have moved around a fair bit and racked up quite a few miles flying to different countries. I’ll make a home out of anywhere. I was at a stage in my life where it was just a clean break. I had always dreamed of travelling since my early teens but the perfect opportunity came up; no house, no relationship and no job. That was certainly my cue to leave!
Where have you been?
On my current world tour trip I have; walked a tiger in Thailand, nearly drowned whilst tubing in Laos, avoided eating dog in Vietnam, fed a bear honey in Malaysia, shopped in Singapore, surfed in Indonesia and currently live in Australia. Past trips include France, Holland, Spain, Czech Republic, Malta, Italy and Pakistan.
Where are you heading to?
My next stop is a ski and snowboarding season in New Zealand. After that I head on to Fiji, road trip around California, check out Canada and then a stop off in New York before I fly back to England to plan my next adventure across Europe or South America. Not decided which yet!
What’s your favorite place so far?
Tricky question! I love lots of places for different reasons. I loved the food in Rome, the surf in Bali and the beaches of Thailand. Laos has a rather special place in my heart. Couldn’t quite put my finger on it but I was just so happy while I was there. I wish I had stayed longer and got to experience more of the country, culture and its wonderful people.
What’s in your bag that you are yet to touch?
My first aid kit! I know it’s a random one to want to use but I paid a lot of money for mine and never had cause to use it. Well okay, I have been injured once but that was so serious that my little first aid kit wasn’t going to cut it and I was whisked away to hospital. I’m sure I will need it at some point. Come on paper cut…
A big thanks to Amar for agreeing to take part in this. Check him out on Twitter at @GapYearEscape
