Random Traveller #22

Welcome to round 22 of ‘Meet a Random Traveller’. Although we have hit the road now, we are still looking for new random travellers as we will mix them up between bloggers and “normal” travellers! So this week it’s a blogger….

Random Traveller #22

Who are you?
Ryan Galeria and Sabeena Khan (The Khalerias) are a couple to quit their day jobs to head out on an extended adventure spanning the globe. We left California on December 26, 2009, and are currently working at a backpackers hostel in Berat, Albania as a cook and bartender. You can follow our travels at thekhalerias.wordpress.com

Don’t you have a home to go to?
Once we made the decision to leave home for a long trip and saved enough cash, we decided to leave everything behind and sold everything (well, almost everything). Along with some valuables, Sabeena saved her bike and Ryan saved a surfboard. Although we plan on moving back to San Francisco when we’re through, we are open to the idea of finding a new home along the way…

Where have you been?
From California, we headed to Panama, and then through South America for 5 months. From there, we have traveled through South Africa, Egypt, Turkey, and Romania before settling in Albania for a little break from being on the road.

Where are you heading to?
From Albania, we are headed through Montenegro and Bosnia before spending a weekend full of beer and debauchery at Oktoberfest in Munich. From there, we fly to Nepal for a 21-day trek through the Annapurna Circuit. After that, the world is our oyster!

What’s your favorite place so far?
This is a tough question – for many reasons. Some of our highlights:

• Being in South Africa for the beginning of the World Cup. The people and the energy were some of the most inspiring and awakening we’d ever experienced.
• Colombia. A little less used to tourism, Colombians are so friendly and inviting that you have no choice but to feel right at home there. Also, attending a friend’s wedding in Medellin made the experience even more memorable.

What’s in your bag that you are yet to touch?
Hours of research and a lot of advice from friends left us pretty prepared before we headed out, so we have used almost everything we packed. I have an emergency survival blanket that hasn’t been opened yet (thankfully!) and also a lot of my arsenal of first aid supplies haven’t been dug into.

A big thanks to Ryan and Sabeena for agreeing to take part in this!
