Random Traveller #16

Welcome to round 16 of ‘Meet a Random Traveller’. Once we hit the road this section will be dedicated to the people we meet along the way but, until then, we shall meet some of the guys and gals who have beat us to it and are already out their doing their thing.

Random Traveller #16

Who are you?
I’m Tom Mcloughlin, passionate traveller and writer and editor of my very own backpacking blog called Top Backpacking Destinations. I discovered my love for travel when i went to Honduras after school, living in a small village and teaching English in the local school. I did it as an excuse to get out of education for a while rather than through a desperation to travel but it gave me the bug and i’ve travelled as much as i can ever since. The blog came around very recently when i decided to share the experiences of all the places i’ve visited in the hope that others can use them to make a more informed decision on where they go when they pick up their backpack. Hopefully it adds a bit more of a personal touch and added entertainment that many of the bigger sites don’t.

Tom in Honduras

Don’t you have a home to go to?
Unfortunately i am currently at home! My last extended trip was last year when i spent 6 months in South America though i try and get away as much as the pennies will allow. I was recently in Morocco for a few weeks which was incredible, it was just a shame i couldn’t explore more of it. I live in Leeds, England and try and explore as much of the UK as possible in the down time between longer trips abroad.

Where have you been?
As i said before, my passion for travel was born in Honduras and i’ve visited a lot of the surrounding countries in Central America. I’ve explored a lot of Europe too and have been lucky enough to spend some time in South East Asia. I managed to see a good portion of South America last year and I’ve also spent a lot of time in the USA, particularly in California. At the moment i’m more of an Americas boy than Asia and Africa – i need to put that right!

Patagonia

Where are you heading to?
India is top of the list at the moment, it looks like an incredible place and i’ll be booking my ticket as soon as i can. I’m also intrigued by places like Mongolia and Kazakhstan – they seem so distant yet i’m sure they’ve got some amazing things to see and apparently some of the friendliest people in the world.

What’s your favorite place so far?
I’ve got a soft spot for Honduras.  There are some incredible beaches on the Bay Islands and some amazing, undiscovered areas on the mainland like La Mosquitia. I also loved Patagonia as a specific area, i’m not sure i’ll ever be as impressed by a destination as i was when i arrived there.

Half Dome in Yosemite NP

What’s in your bag that you are yet to touch?
I always take travel wash away with me and a DIY washing line, yet always end up waiting until i find a launderette which seem to be ten a penny nearly everywhere i’ve been – hopefully that doesn’t make me sound too smelly!

A big thanks to Tom for agreeing to take part in this. Check them out on Twitter at @backpackerboy
