Our Plans!
Posted on 04. Mar, 2010 by Kirsty in Blog, Planning
So what exactly do we have in mind for our trip?
As we’ve said we are flying out to Beijing on the 25th of August and from there we have a rough idea of what we are going to get up to but as the name of this site suggests… we’ve got no place to be, nowhere we have to be, no plans to stick to, nothing.
So for the moment this is what we plan to do unless something else takes our fancy:
China – We plan on spending a week in Beijing, taking it easy and dealing with a bit of culture shock no doubt. We have agreed we are not going to rush around like crazy tourists trying to take everything in during a few days, we are going to take it steady and try and get a real feel for the place. A couple of must see’s however: the forbidden city and a trip to the great wall (obviously).
From there we plan on heading to X’ian and then back to the east coast to check out Hangzhou, from what I’ve read and seen of the place it looks pretty special.
We have most of what we plan to do in China half planned so that we can change it if we please. Although one thing set in stone is meeting up with a good friend of ours who has recently gone out to China to teach English on a year contract. We plan on staying with him around the time of my birthday so it will be nice to have someone from home to celebrate it with (as well as Kirsty).
From there we plan to visit Hong Kong before moving back through China and then into Vietnam. After a lot of reading the places that stick in my mind that I want to check out the most are: Ha Long Bay and Ho Chi Minh City.
Next is Cambodia and Laos, with these we have got a few things in mind but I’m sure we’ll bump into some like minded travelers going they other way who will suggest things they’ve enjoyed and can recommend.
It would be wrong to go to Laos and not go tubing, it looks like a lot of fun and a must do. Alcohol, water, rope swings, zip lines etc…….sounds good to me.
Everything above can change depending on what comes up, who we meet, we have no time scales on anything, only what our visa’s will allow. The plan is to at some point to arrive on Koh Tao Island in Thailand and comeplete a ‘Full Monty Course’ in scuba diving. We started an open water course here in the UK but unfortunately after the first session I split my elbow wide open and was not able to continue. Due to other commitments we have not been able to start the course again so we have now accepted that we will have to start it from scratch on our trip.
I say ‘have to’ but really it will be a lot nicer learning to dive in the clear ocean than in a dirty lake behind an industrial estate, I think it worked out quite well….
Then what? continue heading south! We haven’t even thought about planning this far ahead and we don’t want to. Who knows what will come up between now and then? That’s the best bit of all.
Poi & Kirsty.

Great itinerary. You’re doing practically the same thing as me in roughly the same time period. I’m heading off mid-August to Japan then jumping over to China and working my way down. Maybe we’ll cross paths?

Looks like a very exciting adventure for you guys!!! China is great!!! Definitely look me up if your in Shanghai. I’m glad you have Hangzhou on your list, it’s got to be my fave city in China, I’ve been a couple of times, never get sick of it! I’m putting up pics in the next week! I’m so excited for you! Tip for China try and practice pronunciations of Pinyin, Lonely Planet phrasebook has a good guide. If you have the pronunciations mostly down (though the tones are difficult) you will easily get by reading from your phrasebook when stuck in sticky situations.

Hangzhou looks great and probably the place I am looking forward to most in China, it was mentioned to us by someone and after looking it up has stuck in our plans since.
We’ll be sure to get in touch if we get close. Thanks for the tips!
