Electronic Packing List

Electronic Packing List

Posted on 08. Jul, 2010 by in Blog, Planning

Our main packing list is still being finished off (Poi hasn’t even started his yet) but we’ve known for a while what electronics we would like to take. So here is the list (links are to amazon):

ipod touch iPod touch 32GB – Poi’s orginal ipod classic has broken :( so we’re about to buy this to replace it. He needs quite a bit of space for all his music, and we like the idea of the different travel apps you can have so this seems to be the perfect replacement.

Ipod nano 8gb – it’s purple enough said!

Braun Silk-épil Xpressive Pro Epilator – this is mainly for me! I am used to waxing but bought this back in Janurary and it has worked really well, and has saved me around £50 a month. So I figured may as well take it away – I hate shaving.

Samsung N130 Netbook – Poi had his orginal laptop stolen so we bought this one pretty early to replace it. It has already proved very useful and it is a great peice of kit.Olympus tough 8010

Olympus TOUGH mju 8010 Digital Camera – I got the older version (8000) for birthday last year. It is basically an indestructable camera! You can run over it with a truck, drop it from two metres, go 10 metres under water with it and if you want freeze it! Perfect for me – I’m extremely accident prone.

Crappy old sony camera – Poi’s old camera planning to take it as a back up just in case something happens to mine.

Mobile phone – we’re planning to take one of our old old old phones, just in case.

ipod speakers ipod speakers
- we already have these so thought there is no harm in taking them they have been a god send on other holidays.

Head Torch – for light

2/3 power convertors-  any help with these most appreciated as I am still a bit confused as to which are the best. Ideally I would love one with a USB charger too.

We’ve tried to keep it all down to a minimum but I’m not sure if this means we are in the flashpacker category?

We’re an Amazon affilate so if you click through and purchase anything from amazon we will get a small percentage of the purchase price.

You may not actually need a power converter. Adaptor plugs yes, but a power converter may be unnecessary. Take a look at all your electronics. There should be a sticker that states what it is rated for. Most items now act as mini converters(like laptop power cords and camera battery chargers). If it says “Input: AC 100-240V” you should be golden to safely plug it in wherever.

I had the same worry too until I actually talked to someone at an electronics store and he pointed out that most power cords and such allow a wide range of voltage through and regulates it so only what your device requires is sent to the device(ie// my netbook power block is rated as 100-240V input, 19V — 2.1A output).

Definitely check that out as converters are damn heavy.

This one is what you need! Tad on the pricy side…I’m sure you can find an unbranded one on ebay for half the price though.

You definitely have it all covered, After 4 months traveling I wish I could downsize my electronic list but it seems like I need everything so I’ve been throwing out clothes instead!

Perfect list! I have the Olympus camera you talk about and while I love it for underwater shots, I’ve probably been through 3 of them. They DO break!!! :(

Oh no! This is not good news, I’ve had mine for a year now but I havent used it that heavily – do they replace them easily then or do you re-buy them?

I want to keep my list down to a minimum too but downsizing my gadget fetish is going to be a challenge.

My advice? Leave the iPod speakers at home. The iTouch has a built in speaker for on the go, and you won’t use them nearly as much as you think you will anyway. If it’s appropriate to listen to music via speaker (rather than headphones), ie. you’re in a private room alone, you may as well boot up the laptop if you want to listen to your tunes through better speakers than an iPod.

To replace the speakers in your bag, might I suggest a portable hard drive? You can get huge ones (storagewise) that are small ones (sizewise), and it’s a way of keeping those all important photos and videos separately in case of laptop thievery. If you can’t get wifi, it’s also a good way to transfer stuff so you can still update your blog from an internet cafe.

Good luck with the packing :)

Brilliant advice Susan! I’ll have a look into a portable hard drive, it does make more sense than the ipod speakers!

      Thanks :-)

    Purple rules, I love it!

As for the electronic part I like the idea of having most electronics run on a micro or mini USB, means less cords are needed.

hmm… very similar to my list… but I would suggest perhaps a flash drive? Comes in handy if (a) you don’t want to carry your laptop around town but want to post/send email, (b) there’s no wifi and you want to avoid running up expensive internet cafe fees by pre-writing emails or posts.
